Collaboration and creativity dominate in a battle of the minds to create innovative dealership solutions

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL – August 14, 2015 – More than 200 Associates, interns, wide-eyed optimists and forward-thinking geniuses recently gathered at CDK Global’s ("CDK Global" and “CDK”) (Nasdaq: CDK) Portland, Oregon office for a Summer Hack-a-thon. This was CDK’s fourth such event bringing people together to brainstorm new ways technology can be used to benefit CDK’s dealership clients. In total, more than 30 teams worked together over five days to collaborate and create new ideas that could be put into future development.

The Hack-a-thon is a part of CDK’s innovative culture, which is dedicated to the Agile product development methodology where new ideas evolve through collaboration among cross-functional teams. Participants worked all week on their projects in the newly remodeled Portland Plaza office – taking advantage of the new, open design of the space, which was designed specifically for team collaboration. This hack-a-thon’s focus was on providing flexible, easy-to-use solutions that will delight CDK’s clients and put them in the driver’s seat – with the teams delivering more business-centric and client-centric projects.

“The level of associate engagement, innovation and creativity completely exceeded our expectations in every way,” said Rajiv Amar, Division Vice President of Development at CDK Global. “This was our best hack-a-thon ever – with the focus of bringing better technology to our dealer clients.”

Each team had 5 minutes to present their innovations during demo day, last Friday. Judges included Greg Meyer, Chief Technology Officer of CDK; Paul Nagy, Vice President, Product Management of CDK, and Warren Harrison, Chair of the Department of Computer Science, Portland State University. See the pictures from this year’s hack-a-thon here.

CDK would like to congratulate this year’s winning projects:

  • Project: Caller ID interface that delivers real-time, on-demand consumer (caller) intelligence.
  • Project: A deal dashboard that summarizes the status and financial health of a deal, along with flagging missing data.
  • Project: Join CDK ServiceEdge with Common Services for one-click provisioning and real-time appointment capacity management.
  • Project: Monitor and certify network configurations related to QoS, Netflow and SNMP data.
  • Project: Run a Dealer Management System (DMS) in VirtualBox on your workstation. Imagine having a smaller library of virtual machines that are managed by your team and Global Hosting. The number of total images could be significantly decreased, thus reducing overall costs.

CDK would also like to thank their sponsors: Cisco Systems, Inc., Dynatrace, Ixia, Optiv, and Puralsight.

"The ideas generated during the hack-a-thon demonstrated that we are moving in a direction that is very exciting for our customers,” said Greg Meyer, Chief Technology Officer of CDK Global. “We are focused on the right things and on improving the CDK experience. We weren't just playing around this week – we were solving real business problems and doing work that we can put into production today. The cross-functional alignment has never been stronger in Portland. I'm moved by all the passionate work that went into this week. We are in a perfect position to take on the future."
