Experience Gives High School Girls the Opportunity to Learn More about High-tech Careers

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL – February 19, 2015 – CDK Global, Inc. ("CDK Global" or “CDK”) (Nasdaq: CDK) announced today the success of their “Agile in a Day” mentoring event. The experience was in partnership with the Portland ChickTech: High School program and was hosted by CDK’s Portland office. The goal of the day was to provide a fun, real-life, engineering and technology experience and to encourage the young women to pursue careers in the tech industry.

“As a company providing innovations to the automotive retail industry, it’s part of our DNA to support interest in technology at a broader level,” said Steve Anenen, President and CEO of CDK Global. “If we can help provide a forum to inspire young women to pursue engineering, everyone benefits.”

“Agile in a Day” was supported by 60 CDK volunteers and mentors, and included 30 high school participants from across the Portland area. There were four workshop teams – each made up of a Product Owner, Software Engineers, Quality Engineers, and the ChickTech participants. The format followed the typical Agile development process that CDK practices, beginning with the business problem and ending with a solution that would result in an improved client experience.

“ChickTech is super excited to partner with CDK because we both share the vision of changing the ratio of women in technology. Today provided our girls with a solid foundation in Agile development methodologies, and it was a blast!”, said Carla Clay, ChickTech Portland Program Manager.

All the girls participated in huddle sessions within their teams and worked directly with the software engineers to learn new development techniques using HTML and AngularJS. At the end of the day, each team confidently presented their new expertise and accomplishments in a group Agile showcase.

ChickTech holds various events throughout the year. One of the non-profit group’s goals is to teach high school girls that engineering can be fun and exciting. They have created a comprehensive yearlong program called ChickTech: High School, which has already introduced hundreds of enthusiastic young girls to technology, the fun things you can create with it, and related careers. ChickTech is now in its second year and is growing throughout Oregon, Seattle and San Francisco.

Participants from CDK’s recent event can also attend follow-up workshops throughout the year with ChickTech to remain engaged and continue down their desired career path. All workshops are hands-on and project-based, so that each girl leaves with a sense of accomplishment and a burst of confidence. The program is free to participants.

The CDK-hosted ChickTech event took place on February 16 at CDK’s Portland Plaza office. See event photos or video. If you would like to make a donation to ChickTech, please visit their website at ChickTech.org.
